Starting to feel like the little boy who cried wolf...

God has a way of reminding you what matters sometimes. Family & Health are far more important than anything we do so I hope each of you finds yourselves grateful for each today.

The first two rugs we don't have a photo of because there was a tragic death in the family of a very young child she had to leave right away for her great nieces funeral.

Another rug is already at another hookers home and no picture :-(

A third rug is on it's way to me so I will snap a picture before I start hooking on it to post, a fourth rug should be following soon.

A little FALL CLEANING

It has been some time since we started this blog and a few links have changed so in an effort to keep them fresh & fair I am doing a little cleaning..

A little sweetness

Just wanted to share my favorite little enhancement that makes things a little sweeter.

Honey Butter

Take 1 stick of salted butter & let warm to room temperature (remember when Grandma left her butter out all the time?)
Toss the stick in your mixing bowl and add 1 tbsp of your favorite honey & blend until smooth.
Now just transfer into a pretty little dish & chill until you want to add a little sweetness to your day!

One Completed Rug Arrives Home

After a trip to & fro across the United States Mimi's Rug arrived home!

She likes it I guess, which is good because a few of us were willing to adopt it for life!

Ladies, how do I thank each of you? I received my finished rug today from Kelley, and well, to tell you the truth, it brought tears to my eyes! This rug is so much more beautiful than I could have ever made it. My husband couldn't believe how wonderful it looks!!

I think I speak for all of us when I say it was a pleasure Mimi!

I just shipped off two rugs to Cheryl In Texas

This last week I held onto two rugs awaiting Hurricane Ike's final destination they have been picked up this morning and are in route to Texas.

It is really exciting to contribute a little time & hooking to these rugs.
While I will not be one of the lucky gals to receive their rug finished I have enjoyed co-ordinating this UFO Round Robin.
I truly believe a little of us is incorporated into everything we create, which is why I treasure things that are old & handmade.

I hope to find my camera cable so I can upload the pictures & maybe even update this blog sometime soon!

UFO Challenge...have YOU seen one?

Earlier this summer, around the beginning of May, I asked the ladies if they had any Un Finished Objects (patterns/rugs) that they would be willing to mail off on a sort of 'Round Robin' trip across the country.

Twelve women signed up to participate with nine sending a pattern on the road.

They were encouraged to send a journal with their rug to document it's travels.
Each Hooker was asked to take a photo of themselves with each rug when they finished hooking their portion.
A few of the ladies were great sports and have done so, some were camera shy & only took pictures of the rugs and a few have not sent a photo to date.
At the end I hoped to have a visual diary to send the participants of their rugs journey along with a finished or almost finished rug.

Each participant was to hook about a 4 x 4 area based on the size rugs that were requested and if you wanted to hook more or a little less that was okay.

We are about halfway through with the rugs travel and I thought I would share some of the photos of each Rug as it started it's journey.

Tropical Lobster Salad Recipe

Here is the first in our Food Recipe Series...if you have a favorite you would like to share please send it to us.
Ingredients
For the lobster salad:
2 (1.5 pound) live Maine lobsters
3 ears sweet corn
1 ripe mango, peeled, pitted and diced
1/2 red bell pepper, diced
1/2 vidalia onion, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 small can mandarine orange slices
2 tablespoons fresh, chopped cilantro
salt, to taste
white pepper, to taste
1 head romaine lettuce, shredded
For the dressing:
1 cup watermelon, seeded
2 tablespoons grapefruit or orange juice
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup Olive oil
whole cilantro leaves, for garnishing
Cooking Instructions
1. Cook the lobsters in a large pot of boiling salted water for 12 minutes. Let cool & remove
the meat from the shells.
2. Chop the tail & joint meat into 1/2 inch pieces, reserve the whole claw meat for garnish.
3. In a medium pot of boiling salted water, cook the corn until tender, about 10 to 15 min.
Let cool and cut the kernels from the cob.
4. Toss the lobster meat, corn, mango, red pepper, onion, celery, and cilantro in medium
mixing bowl, season with salt & pepper.
5. To make the dressing, puree the watermelon,grapefruit or orange juice, vinegar in a food
processor or blender for 1 minute. With the motor running, slowly add olive oil.
6. Add about 1/2 cup of dressing to salad mixture, season with salt and white pepper and
refrigerate for 2 hours. (Reserve the leftover dressing for another use.) Serve the salad over
shredded romaine lettuce on individual plates and garnish with a lobster claw and whole
cilantro leaves and mandarine orange slices.

Hot Tip from the Lab....my bathroom sink

Recently there was discussion in our Primitives Class regarding the use of permanent markers for drawing patterns on foundation. While most use a Sharpie and or their Rub A Dub for this process there is still question as to the bleed resistance and acidity of these and any marker claiming to be permanent.

The two key points that should be your primary concern when choosing a permanent marker to draw out a design are
1. Are they Waterproof/Bleedproof
2. What is the Acidity content of the ink solution used

I tested two different manufacturers of Colored Permanent Markers Bic & Creative Memories. While I have not tested them both on all the foundations available, I did test them on bleached linen for the purpose of this article and suggest you test the ones you plan to use on the backing of your choice.

Creative Memories website clearly states that their pens are made specifically & tested only on album pages/photo mounting paper.
Tests performed on all their products meet or exceed the industry standards.
Bic's website only claisms their pens are water resistant.
Creative Memories pens are acid free Creative Memories pens meet ISO standard 18902-2001 and are acid-free with a pH between 7.0 and 9.5.
I could not find any information on the acidity of the inks used in Bic's Pens

Sharpie's website has the following information and while I did not test them I recommend you do before using them.
Their Rub A Dub Marker while waterproof contains acid that can degrade your backing and your wool over time.
Their Standard Permanent Marker packaging contains the following information

Why does the Sharpie packaging say it is not for letter writing or cloth?
We do not recommend the Sharpie for letter writing as it is solvent base ink and will soak through paper. We also do not recommend the Sharpie for use on cloth as it may fade or bleed in the wash. Also, over time a yellow halo may appear around the marking.

Here are the photographs of the two pen series I tested....after allowing them to dry for 24 hours neither rubbed off with just my fingers.
I ran both inks under cold water for a minute then blotted, the Bic inks bled onto my white towel

I then left them sit in water for 24 hours

The Bic pens bled and ran while Creative Memories did not.

36 hours later some of the inks in the Bic series have completely washed out Creative Memories still look the same as when I drew them.

While your foundations may not get wet or be underwater for 24/36 hours the moisture content in our air could affect the inks and allow them to bleed into your wool. If your using a light color wool it could affect the wools coloring, should you wash or spill on the finished piece it would also affect the wool by bleeding into the wool.

You may not need every color used here to draw your patterns however for teaching purposes, beginner kits or complex designs the colors are very helpful.
Personally some may not care about the longevity of their rugs or if the inks used to draw their patterns bleeds into the wools, I however do and figure if I am putting my time & energy into something I want to do the BEST I can with the BEST products available, my pieces are made to last generations and become Treasured Heirlooms.

~Hit n' Miss Challenge Info~

Grab your left-overs & a piece of rug backing! This is a GREAT opportunity to start your Spring cleaning! Many of us have baskets of wooly worms just needing to find a new home in a nice rug.

Here is how it will work ~

* get a piece of rug backing (your choice) and mark out a size of at least 10 by 18 inches.

* choose a SHAPE ..... circle, square, triangle, oval, rectangle, hexagon, etc

* Using your choice of shape - JUST ONE - mark out a design on your backing using that shape repeatedly. Be creative here, a simple row of circles is nice.... but what about using one big circle & then several 'broken' circles? Think of quilting blocks to see how creative you can get using just one shape to make a design.

* Using ONLY worms from your left-overs basket ~ hook away! The only exception I will allow.... is a row or two of a solid color to border the entire rug or outline shapes in your design. There should not be any solid hooking masses ~ think hit n' miss.

The deadline for this challenge is set of May 4th. I will compile all the rug photos in one album ~ anonymously for voting. Once the voting is complete.... winners will be announced & the album will be updated with the artist names.
